Because wood was scarce, early Southwest settlers built their homes with a mixture of mud and clay bricks called adobe. The style caught on quickly. By the early 1900s, builders deliberately designed in adobe to attract tourists. And in 1957, Santa Fe made this practice law when it required all new buildings to resemble adobe.
