CHINA: The Gobi Desert, which actually consists of five desert regions on the China-Mongolia border, is a land of harsh extremes. Temperatures there may drop as low as -40°F (-40°C) in winter and rise to 113°F (45°C) in summer. Less than three people per square mile reside in this "waterless land."
