In the harsh desert straddling Utah and Colorado, paleontologist Earl Douglass discovered a 200-foot- long prehistoric sandbar layered with plant and animal fossils. Starting in 1909, Douglass and his crew excavated 350 million tons of fossils, including full skeletons and remains of some previously unknown dinosaur species. Today, Dinosaur National Monument is the most productive Jurassic Period dinosaur quarry in the world.
