From the Louvre to Notre Dame, from the Eiffel Tower to the Petite Palais, the history of Paris can be viewed from the River Seine. Because the river changes direction several times as it arcs through the city, passing under 32 bridges, Parisians have opted for the less complicated designation of referring to the river's sides as the Left and Right Banks.
