Arab traders arrived on Africa's east coast in the 8th century and influenced the region's languages. The name of Kenya's national language, Swahili, comes from the Arab word sawahil or "coast." The Swahili word "safari" comes from the Arab word safara, meaning "to travel" or "set out."
